Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. As an only girl She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while learning about secondary education. She planned to become the high school's English teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left the college after a year of studies and was an aide to teachers. Being a poet started performing, she was able to perform in live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form an ensemble. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. In a Roots show she was spotted to be an artist. Following that, she started collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
